Museveni's 'professionalization' prison services bears fruits - #Uganda

After personalising the Army and Police, Museveni moved against the Prison Services. On 13th July 2017, we wrote an article titled; LOOMING CATASTROPHE AS MUSEVENI MOVES TO 'PRIFESSSIONALIZE' THE PRISON SERVICES. We highlighted that the regime functionaries will have free access to prisoners for torture and forces disappearance, the well-connected prisoners will be spending nights and weekends at their homes and that the regime will be able to detain people in prison without going through court.

Around mid last month an inmate at Kitgum Prison, Babylon Anywar was sighted riding a police motorcycle Reg. No. UP 4032 belonging to Kitgum Central Police Station. Shortly after, the same inmate was sighted attending an opposition FDC public rally in Kitgum town (see both photos).


On 22nd January 2017 we wrote another article titled; WHO WILL STOP THIS CARNAGE IN UGANDA PRISONS? We highlighted the growing trend of prisoners dying in motor road accidents while being taken to work on private farms for hire. Last month one Prison Warder died on the spot while nine prisoners were seriously injured in Gulu district when a private vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a swamp in Omoro District. They were returning to Gulu from work on a private farm in Anaka. The carnage continues unchecked.

In his new scheme to tighten hiz grip on power, Museveni has been carrying out schemes to to personalize the security forces. According to him, Uganda's security forces includes the Army, the police, the prison services and the Game Rangers. He started with the army by creating an officer corps that is loyal to his son Gen.

Who will stop this carnage in #Uganda #prisons?

Mid this week four inmates were killed in a road accident along FortPortal - Kamwenge Road just four kms from FortPortal town. Several other inmates and Prison Warders sustained serious injuries. The prisoners from Katojo Prison who were being transported on a private Mitsubish pick-up vehicle number UAE 234 were going to work on a private farm in Gweri village.

Following the other piece on prison carnage, the Prison authorities banned use of private cars and increased pay for prison labour.
