Following the invasion of Parliament by the army and its violent physical
assault and detention of Opposition legislators, nine bombs have been exploded
at the residences of three opposition parliamentarians in Kampala. The
explosions that left significant damage to the buildings have been described by
the police as "just factory-made hand grenades" as if the other
grenades are made in the "leopard's a..s"!!!! The police have gone
ahead to describe these grenades as " harmless " and that they are
simply used for training purposes.
Any grenade or explosive that is not factory made is referred to as
"home-made" or improvised explosive devices (IED). Unlike in Burundi,
Rwanda or Congo, Uganda's troubled past did not place grenades in illegal
hands. Even the isolated incidents in the late 1990s of the so called
"grenade attacks by ADF in Kampala", were using home-made or IEDs.
Therefore, the so called " factory-made hand grenade" attacks at the
residences of parliamentarians in Kampala is the work of the police and the perpetrators
will never be known.
They are the latest weapon on the political scene after Mambas, MacroGaril
commando machine guns, teargas, pepper spray, Kiboko Squad and mysterious raids
on CSO offices among other weapons. These so called factory-made hand grenades
have recently been acquired by the regime police for use in quelling mobs. If
hurled, they produce such a loud sound that psychologically immobilizes their targets
for ease of arrest. They are also meant to send shivers down the spine of not
only those to be arrested or kidnapped but also onlookers who would dare come
to the rescue of the victims.
They have been in use in the Uganda police's closest partner states. The explosions at the residences of the three
opposition parliamentarians was the official launch of these grenades in
Uganda. City residents more especially those in the low-income suburbs should prepare
for frequent big bangs of such explosives during both day and night time. The
police will often use these bombs in the process of arresting suspected drug
abusers, gambling youths, suspected thieves, late night revellers, and
generally just to renew public fear. Watch the space.
INFORMATION IS POWER AND DEFIANCE IS THE WAY TO GO.
