By CHANGE OF GUARDS
On September 3, 2020, Museveni wrote a missive in which he responded to some social media posts that referred to him as a Munyarwanda.
"I am not a Munyarwanda. I am a Musiita and my mother is Mweene Rukaari and you can go to the beginning of creation, you will not find any Bunyarwandism in me. However, it would not have mattered if I was a Munyarwanda. Part of Rwanda, Kisoro, was put in Uganda by the colonial borders. They are indigenous Ugandans and they are Kinyarwanda speakers (Kifumbira). Secondly, a part of Mpororo, Omutara, was put in Rwanda by the Colonial borders. A number of Bahororo clans actually have their origins in Omutara: The Bagina from Kichwamba, the Bakimbiri from Rutuungu,” he wrote.
His political journey has been characterised by consistent allegations that he is a Munyarwanda. When he declared the Banyarwanda as one of the Ugandan tribes in 1995 he had thought that issue would be resolved. Nonetheless, it has persisted simply because he is practicing favouritism for the Banyarwanda and this is the first time he has now publicly come out to clear the air. However, his failure to expressly claim to belong to the Banyankole tribe aggravates the matter. The so-called Basiita is not a tribe but a mere clan in many of the tribes like the Banyooro, Batooro and Banyankole in the former Bunyoro Kitara empire. During the 1980 general elections, he lost to Sam Kuteesa in his home area of Nyabushozi after the Bahima branded him a Munyarwanda.
The Banyarwanda in any part of the world strongly believe that Museveni is a Munyarwanda. Even those in their Ugandan strongholds of Ankole, Buddu and the Cattle Corridor strongly believe that Museveni is not only a Munyarwanda but their guardian. Whenever there is a general election, the Banyarwanda in this areas are told that if Museveni loses power they will be expelled to Rwanda. The few such Banyarwanda who are seen to oppose Museveni are treated as traitors. The likes of D.P/NUP's Ssewungu are treated with contempt and in the same regard Simeo Nsubuga, Ronald Kibuule and others cannot dare join opposition.
In Rwanda, eastern DRC and some groups in Tanzania's Kagera region,, it is common knowledge that Museveni is a Munyarwanda. On June 1, 2020, Rwanda's online mouthpiece, virungapost.com ran a piece titled:
NO RWANDAN IS A UGANDAN BUT THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE.
"Not only does Rwanda not owe Uganda anything, no single Rwandan leader is Ugandan. On the contrary, many Ugandan leaders are of Rwandan origin. As this article shows in great detail, not only is President Museveni himself a Munyarwanda, his wife too, Janet Kataha Museveni originates from Mutara through her grandfather who was a veterinary assistant in Rwanda during the colonial period before fleeing to Uganda following a great cattle epidemic in the early 1950s, when irate pastoralists accused him of poisoning their cattle. Gen Abel Kandiho’s late mother, Daisy, was Rwandan. The list is long."
Therefore, Museveni's denial of his alleged Banyarwanda ancestry, though lacking, can only be believed by other Ugandans but not the Banyarwanda because they regard him as their own.
