UGANDA: MUSEVENI UNLEASHES GEN. KYANDA AGAINST J. KABULETA IN BUNYORO (photos)

By CHANGE OF GUARDS

Bunyoro sub-region is the cradle of the ancient most powerful kingdom in the Great Lakes region; Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom. At the advent of colonialism, under its amiably powerful King Kabalega, the Kingdom of Bunyoro successfully resisted being brought under colonialism. With the help of Buganda, the British colonialists eventually succeeded in conquering Bunyoro and subjecting it to colonialism. They set off to punish Bunyoro and the Banyooro in general by way of economic deprivation.

However, Banyoro nationalism thrived and still flourishes. They are known to be resolute and principled. They played an active role in Museveni's Bush War but got a raw deal. Museveni has deliberately delayed the production of oil in Bunyoro out of fear for this Banyooro nationalism. He is mindful of the Ogoni and Nigeria's oil in the Niger Delta. For over two decades now he has been managing a sinister scheme of infiltrating immigrants from other regions of the country and even beyond and settling them in Bunyoro. To further weaken the Banyoro, he has been splitting its original districts of Hoima and Masindi into smaller ethnically based entities. Feeling that he has successfully subdued Bunyoro, he is now fast tracking the oil production. It is in the same regard that he recently humiliatingly discarded Bunyoro's strongman, Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza from the Central Executive Council (CEC). He recently told the Banyoro that they should not put much hope in oil.

However, he was struck by another upcoming strong pillar of Bunyoro, Joseph Kabuleeta who is vying for the presidency. Museveni's major concern lies in Kabuleeta's campaign message. The astute journalist turned church Pastor who hails from Bunyoro is leading a campaign of economic empowerment to Ugandans. He argues that the nation's wealth is held by a few individuals who wield state power.
"I am not standing against Museveni but standing for a reason. We are taking money to Ugandans. In the past some crumbles used to fall through to the common people to eat but now the ceiling has been sealed completely and nothing is coming down. I am standing on equitable distribution of resources. We want to bring this wealth down to you the people of Uganda."
He also contends that Museveni's "oppressive regime is only as strong as the fear it imposes on the population."

He further argues that;
".......but when the people rise up, as we are doing now, they will encounter an empire that is very weak and crumbling and is there for the taking. Our desire for change must be stronger than our fear. We have a lot more to gain than we have to lose. Great as the challenges ahead; but greater are the opportunities."
He has been systematically carrying that message across the country with special concentration on Bunyoro, Tooro and the Albertine Region in general. It is said that he is registering a lot of serious following from Banyoro youth back in Bunyoro through his combing of local villages.

In one of his recorded video clips and rants posted on Facebook around July 2020, he reveals that since 2013 the crude oil from Bunyoro has been smuggled out of the country in trucks by the powerful Museveni regime cohorts. He goes ahead to allege that in order to ensure secrecy, squads of mysterious ironbar hitmen were unleashed on Hoima to spread terror that would keep the locals indoors as the crude oil is siphoned. He mentions companies like Watertech, MSL and Civicon as being behind the said snuggling. Conspicuously, the Museveni regime did not come out to either dismiss his assertion or to intimidate him with criminal charges. Instead, Museveni has deployed one of his blue-eyed Political Assistant, Gen. Leo Kyanda who hails from Bunyoro to dismantle Kabuleeta's influence in Bunyoro. The political General is appealing to the youth to abandon 'crime.' For Museveni, Kabuleeta is not a formidable presidential contender but a potential replica of a Kabalega who invoked Banyoro nationalism to successfully resist the British, a Nigeria's Ken Sarowiwa of the oil rich Ogonland.

In July 2019, Joseph Kabuleeta launched a stinging media campaign against Museveni's military dictatorship. In his July 8 missive dubbed "Mafia Empire and Transition" he criticized Museveni's scheme of having his son, Gen. Muhoozi to inherit the presidency. It went ahead to describe Museveni as a thief, lair and a gambler who is bent on handing over the "family business called Uganda Ltd."
He reassured Ugandans by predicting that the said "Mafia Empire was crumbling and that Uganda will return to Ugandans."

He was consequently abducted and detained by Museveni's security apparatus on charges of offensive communication against the person of the President. No wonder, as usual, he was released without being formally charged in the hope that he would be coerced into silence. Instead, a year later, he declared his intention to run for the presidency and it is said that he has already acquired all the required nomination signatures from 2/3 of all the districts. He is making the oil rich Bunyoro sub-region his stronghold but Museveni believes he is mobilizing the Banyoro to 'agitate" for equitable sharing of the oil proceeds or else they disrupt the production.

Watch the space.

INFORMATION IS POWER AND THE PROBLEM OF UGANDA IS MUSEVENISM
