My name is Martha Leah Nangalama. I was born and raised in Uganda. I currently live in Canada. I work with a team of people in Uganda. Our team comprises:
1) Researchers
2) Analysts
3) Journalists
4) Lawyers
5) Former high level security operatives
6) Some military people
7) Opinion writers.

Today, I sent an email to all the members on our team and told them that I will not be paying their salaries for December 2020 salaries until next week (January 2021). Of course it hurt to have to tell them such bad news but our financial situation is dire and we need help.

Just to give you an idea, for the last 7 years our team has been working to bring information to Ugandans and the world about the problems going on in Uganda and surrounding countries, I have been paying all the analysts out of my own pay cheque from my current job and consulting contracts I used to get or other work our team does and are paid for. This year, 2020 has killed many things. We have not gotten any single paying consulting contract all year.

Our team... my team... Martha's team. We need food for the writers and their families. We need rent. We need medical care. We need transportation money. We need air time / data and internet connection. We need communication devices. We need bare necessities in order for us to continue in our work because INFORMATION IS POWER. 

In Uganda, the average salary of a journalist is $200 per month. The average salary for a lawyer is $300 per month. A doctor earns $250 per month. An army general is paid $450 per month. A senior police officer or intelligence officer is paid $500 per month. You can see that these are not living wages. I pay the members on my team a lot more than that but it is because I know their expenses.

I have a TIN (Tax Identification Number) for USA and Canada and will account for all funds I receive. I will not use any money you give for me. I will use it for our team. We will be very grateful for your help. Every little bit helps. You are surely aware that journalists are facing horrible times now. Media no longer has freedom (most) and journalists are being killed on a daily basis. For our group to continue to do the INFORMING & EDUCATING, our work, what we do, it is serious. We might not even survive in February 2021 when we get no help. Keep in mind that February 2021 will be a key month. Uganda will have completed their elections and hell will break out. Something like shit will hit the fan. You can go on Google and search for "Uganda election violence human rights violations" and that will give you an idea of what is loading.....
