At midnight on September 20, 2020 a strange fire outbreak gutted the main administration block popularly knows at the Ivory Towers at Makerere University. Ten hours later, fire fighters were still fighting the fierce fire. It is said that the fire that started from the University Secretary's office quickly spread to the Southern Wing that houses records/archives. It is said the fire also touched the basement that is full of archive files spanning the entire history of the institution. Salvaged heaps of documents were seen being evacuated from the debris (see photos). Museveni's wife who doubles as the Minister of Education rushed to the scene and his son Gen. Muhoozi called for thorough Investigations before his elite SFC took control of security at the University.
The development comes amidst heightened public debate on the academic credentials of some top political leaders. On August 11 controversial city Lawyers Male Mabirizi invoked the Right to Information Back and wrote to the Electoral Commission (EC) requesting for copies of PP/NUP candidate Bobi Wine's academic papers that he had submitted for his presidential bid. Four days later on 14th August the EC responded by availing him the said documents. Invoking the same law, on August 21st another city lawyer linked to the PP/NUP Nkunyingi Muwadda wrote to the EC asking for Museveni's academic papers that he had submitted for his 2016 presidential bid. The EC is yet to respond to Nkunyingi and it is most likely that it may never avail him the requested for documents.
Some circles have repeatedly suggested that Museveni went by the name of the Yoseri and not Yoweri during his secondary school education. That he used Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni at Dar es Salaam University. As to when and how he acquired Kaguta as his other name is not clear. Speculation has always pointed out that Museveni was admitted to Makerere University in 1966 before he switched to the University of Dar es Salaam. Other sources alleged that his poor academic performance at A Level did not not qualify him to join Makerere University hence why he ended up in Tanzania. Even if these speculations aren't accurate, it is most probable that Makerere University has records of all Ugandan students who would study from other regional universities. At least there are some records at Makerere University with regard to Museveni's a academic journey.
His wife Janet Museveni's academic papers have also been questionable. When she was contesting for the Parliamentary seat in 2005/6 she claimed to hold a Diploma in Early Childhood Education (1991 - 1993) and a Bachelor of Education degree (1993 - 1996) from Makerere University. It is alleged that she never stepped in any lecture room at Makerere University but used to be tutored at State House by some University Professors. It is only Prof. It is only the Education Psychology Prof. Jethro Opolot who is said to have refused to go to State House for such special lecturing. At one time during her campaigns in Ntungamo, Museveni invited the then Makerere University Admissions Board Secretary Ekirikubnza Tibatemwa who took to the podium to declare that his wife's academic papers were authentic. The gist the matter was that to qualify for joining a Bachelor of Education Degree course as a Diploma holder, one needed to have had credits in teaching subjects such as English, Mathematics, Geography etc yet she had never taught anywhere and had no diploma. She claimed to have taught in Sweden during her exile 1983 - 86) yet she had not yet trained as a Teacher. Further, that her admission was not handled by the Admissions Board as had been the case by other Diploma holder applicants.
With these controversies and myths surrounding the academic records of the Musevenis, the Makerere University fire is timely. In 1989, the Army Headquarters at Republic House (Bulange) was gutted by fire but can anyone tell where the documents that were salvaged are!!!!!
INFORMATION IS POWER AND THE PROBLEM OF UGANDA IS MUSEVENISM
